A group of angry drivers are
reported to have stripped a Divisional Police Officer attached to the
Aramoko Ekiti division over the killing of a fellow colleague.
The late driver, Mr. Omolafe Aderiye, was reportedly killed by armed robbers in Aramoko Ekiti, while travelling to Lagos State.
The
drivers had reportedly gotten provoked over the fact that the robbery
had taken place close to a police check point without their
intervention.
An eyewitness speaking on the DPO's dilemma said:
“The protesting drivers said the police did not respond swiftly. They stripped the DPO naked and destroyed two police vans.”
The Deputy Governor of Ekiti State was later reported to have called a meeting which he chaired, over the issue.
Also in attendance at the meeting was the Commissioner of police, Mr. Etop James, Director of the Department of State Services, Mr. Duke Fubara, NURTW members as well as other security agency heads.
The
Deputy Governor of the State assured everyone gathered at the meeting
that the police would deploy more patrol teams within the Aramoko-Ijero
and Aramoko-Igede areas.
He went on to add that:
“The
police will also investigate the matter thoroughly and bring the
perpetrators to book. Our government is concerned because when a life is
lost, it gives the impression that Ekiti is not safe.”
