Nigeria democracy since 1960 is characterised by mindless
political killings. There is hardly any election year that a politician
is either not gunned down or brutally assassinated.
Fast forward to 2015, there are some politicians who were assassinated as a result of political-related reasons.
Going a bit into retrospect since 1999 when democracy returned to Nigeria after military rule, a good number of prominent and not too known Nigerian politicians have been hacked down by assailants.
One of the victims of political assassination was Chief Bola Ige, the Cicero of Esa-Oke and one time governor of old Oyo state between 1979 and 1983.
Ige was also one-time Minister of Power and Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, all under the presidency of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.
The former justice minister was gruesomely assassinated on Friday, December 21, 2001 in his Bodija residence in Ibadan, Oyo state. Up till this moment, no categorical statement has been issued by the security operatives regarding those behind his assassination.
Other political juggernauts killed are: Funsho Williams, a one time governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos in 2006; Harry Marshall, former Deputy National Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) in 2003; Ayo Daramola, a governorship hopeful in Ekiti in 2006; Dipo Dina, the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) governorship candidate in Ogun state in 2010 as well as Tunde Omojola and Kehinde Fasuba, both in Ekiti state in 2005 and 2009 respectively.
