The Manchester United board are reportedly considering hiring Jose
Mourinho by the end of this month in a desperate bid to salvage the
club’s season. This decision was reportedly taken after Red Devils lost
2-1 to Sunderland on Saturday leaving them six points adrift of the top
four.
The Sun reports that Chelsea former boss Mourinho may replace Van Gaal in time for United's next league game at home to Arsenal on February 28, and though he’d prefer to take up the hotseat in the summer, United officials are considering bringing him in this month in a desperate bid to save the side’s faltering campaign.
They believe they will lose nothing by bringing in Mourinho before the end of the season and axing Van Gaal earlier than planned.
Van Gaal after Saturday's defeat admitted the club’s best chance of re-entering the Champions League is to win the Europa League trophy but they’re showing few signs of being able to compete against the other teams in the league. It is added that Van Gaal has taken a short-term rent on a new pad in Manchester, which would allow him to move out at any time.
