Southern
Nigeria Institute of Innovate Technology, Ifewara in Osun State went on
a rampage yesterday, as Students of the school set the private
institution ablaze because some courses offered by the school were
allegedly not accredited.
We
gathered some reports that, some of the students of the school began
their protest on Sunday evening when they heard that their courses were
not accredited by the National Board for Technical Education. The
students took to violence by vandalising the school’s property. They set
the school buildings and vehicles in the school ablaze.
However,
it was disclosed by one of the students that they had
their matriculation on Friday and they were also told that their courses
had not been accredited.
According
to a student of the school, “They chased us, female students, away and
stole our laptops, phones and other things before they set the female
hostel on fire. They burnt everywhere.”
The
protest started on Sunday evening, and went on again yesterday morning.
The policemen intervention restored peace back to the school.
Dr.
Kola Christwealth, the Chairman Governing Council of Southern Nigeria
Institute of Innovate Technology, said the students are not truthful
with the allegations they made. Dr. Kola said the students lacked
understanding of the benefits of the programmes the school had for
them.
Meanwhile,
the school had reportedly encouraged the students to take professional
examinations important to their programmes without charging them extra
tuition but the students were ignorant of the benefits there.
Also,
Dr. Kola revealed that their courses were accredited by NABTE and they
were only encouraged to enrol for professional exams. He further added
that they were not charged for being prepared for the exams but were
only asked to pay to register for the examinations.
He
said, “The payment is to the professional bodies like ICAN, NIM and
other. They are not going to pay us but some of them said we should be
the ones to pay for them. They will get our diplomas alongside the
professional certificates and this will make them employable and to be
better than most of their mates elsewhere but they are ignorant.”
He
added that, “Their grouse simply is that the school should pay for
their professional exams and we did not make it mandatory for them. It
is optional; you can decide to get only our diploma without writing any
professional exam.”
