Christmas about sharing love, not AIDS, health agency pleads with young Nigerians

The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA) has warned youths to avoid risky behavior during the Christmas season.

According to the agency, data has shown that new infections of HIV occur during the yuletide especially among young people who engage in unprotected sex.

NACA in a statement issued by its Chief Communications Officer, Toyin Aderibidge, said it had become important to advice youths in order to prevent a repeat of new infections often recorded in December.

The statement read in part: “Christmas is that season of joy where the birth of Christ is celebrated around the World. In this period, we demonstrate this joy with loved ones by spending quality time together and exchange gifts among ourselves.

“However, there is a worrisome aspect now festering during this festive season, and that is the indiscriminate sexual and other negative activities during the period, which can lead to uninformed decision making.

“NACA is appealing to the general public that, in sharing gifts among our loved ones, we should not share HIV and to also demonstrate our love by avoiding risky sexual behaviors.”
