Platini threatens to drag FIFA to court

TALKS about football matters not taken to civil courts may well become moribund as FIFA vice president cum UEFA president, Michel Platini on Monday vowed to go to the extreme to upturn the 8-year ban imposed on him and Sepp Blatter by the Ethics committee.

While admitting that he expected the ruling, the former French football legend stated that he will contest the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sports CAS and if he fails to get a ruling in his favour would take his case to a civil court.

Meanwhile both Blatter and Platini have confirmed that they would appeal against the ban and are prepared to take the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne to upturn their bans.

Platini said in a statement sent to AFP that the FIFA decision was a “masquerade” intended to “sully” his name. “This decision does not surprise me,” Platini said.

“Parallel to going to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, I am determined to apply, at the right time, to civil courts to obtain damages for all the prejudice I have suffered over very long weeks,” Platini said. The adjudicatory cham- ber of the Ethics Com- mittee chaired by Mr Hans-Joachim Eckert has banned Mr Joseph S. Blat- ter, President of FIFA, for eight years and Mr Michel Platini, Vice-President and member of the Executive Committee of FIFA and President of UEFA, for eight years from all football-related activities (administrative, sports or any other) on a national and international level. The bans come into force immediately.

A FIFA ethics tribunal banned Platini, a Fifa vice president and UEFA presi- dent, for eight years over a 2 million Swiss franc ($2 million, 1.8 million euros) fee from football’s world body that was authorised by FIFA president Sepp Blatter.

According to the ruling by the Ethics Committee, they were found guilty of breaches surrounding a $2-million “disloyal payment” made to Platini in 2011. The bans are in place with immediate effect.
A statement by the FIFA court said both men showed “abusive execution” of their powers and added that they were guilty of a conflict of interest.
