2015 In Review: 5 Nigerian Celebrities Who Publicly Embarrassed Themselves

As we come closer to the end of the year, we look at some of 2015’s unforgettable embarrassing moments for some of our Nigerian celebrities. For most of them, the year was smooth and wonderful while for others, it had its ups and downs. Below are the top five unforgettable embarrassing celebrity moments this year.

1. Denrele falls off the stage
Denrele Edun, one of Nigeria’s popular TV presenters and red carpet host, known for his crazy lifestyle, might have had a good time this year. But about three months ago, while the TV star was displaying his “crase” as usual on stage by whipping his braids around and jumping around in his signature platform boots, he took a step too far and fell off the stage, into the crowd. Social media had a field day with that one, with clips and memes shared from Instagram to Twitter and Facebook. However, in his characteristic style, the TV personality owned his embarrassing moment, sharing it himself more than once on Instagram.

2. Sean Tizzle’s meltdown over Omawumi’s Hello cover

The Nigerian artist known for his good music and good looks was so close to having a very smooth year but at the last moment decided to react – overreact – to one of singer Omawumi’s cover of Hello by the British singer Adele. Sean Tizzle actually deemed Omawumi’s version of the song way better than the original – which debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the US – and lambasted Nigerians for not appreciating their own. His comments did not sit too well with Nigerians on social media, who mercilessly mocked him for assuming that Adele’s version was a cover to begin with.

3. KCee as the face (and body) of Air Peace Nigeria

The Five Star music act got an ambassadorial deal with Nigerian airline Air Peace and decided to share the good news with his fans on social media by putting up an advert for the company in which he featured. Unfortunately, he miscalculated the magnanimity of Nigerians. The advert which pictured KCee looking peaceful on a pillow in the skies made him the butt of jokes on social media. A subsequent campaign that showed KCee as a member of a cabin crew on one of Air Peace’s planes was equally not well received.

4. Solid Star and the Headies Awards
After releasing various singles this year, singer Solid Star was confident that he would be nominated at the Headies Awards, which he was – in two categories. But the Omotena singer was not satisified so he took to Twitter to make his grievance known and demand one more nomination. He received a lot of backlash form fans for this totally #NoChill moment.

5. The Skiibii death hoax

This is a good example of when a PR stunt goes too far. Five Star Music, which houses KCee and Harrysong, received a lot of backlash and condemnation in the media when it announced the death and subsequent “resurrection” of one of its artists, Skiibii. The label’s manger, Soso Sobrekan, in August “leaked” information to some bloggers about the death of Skiibii who was newly signed to the label at the time. In a swift turnaround, singer KCee later that day denied that Skiibii was dead but had only suffered a blackout. Soon, the barely known singer’s name was trending all over the internet. Soso was eventually “fired” for the poorly thought out stunt and  Skiibii leveraged on his notoriety by releasing a single mere days after supposedly knocking on death’s door. Nigerians hated being taken for a ride and little has been heard of the singer since. Meanwhile, Five Star despite several overtures in the media was lambasted for playing with something as serious as death.
