In 2012, a serving police officer, Isaac Gbawuran, committed an atrocious crime against his wife, Mary Sunday, a graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
The
couple who lived together in a police barracks in Lagos, had an issue
when Sunday had a call and after she answered, the jealous Gbawuran
accused her of cheating on him and answering a man's call in his
presence.
The argument escalated and the policeman became physical, something that was a regular occurrence with him.
Sunday
who could not withstand his strength, ran to a neighbour's house to
escape his wrath but he followed her into the place of her refuge.
Looking for an escape route, Sunday ran into the kitchen of the
neighbour who was incidentally cooking a steaming pot of stew on the
stove.
Gbawuran did the unthinkable by picking the stove and the pot of stew and pouring them on his wife.
Back,
he was first arrested by the state Police Command but was released a
few weeks later with the police releasing a statement that Sunday was
the one who emptied the hot pot of stew on herself.
Since
then, the once pretty lady has been scarred for life with justice not
coming her way, neither has her family been able to raise the N10
million she needs to undergo surgery in India.
Meanwhile,
the man who perpetrated such a heinous crime is still in the Nigeria
Police Force and is being shielded by his colleagues.
Now,
the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC), a non
profit civil rights organization that fights for the rights of abused
and violated women, have come out urging the police to reopen the case
as well making sure Gbawuran faces the law.
